Arizona parents have more K-12 school options than almost anywhere else in the country, but having options isn’t the same as having clarity.
Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make; it shapes not just academic outcomes, but friendships, values, opportunities and lifelong potential. Yet, for far too many families in Arizona, this decision feels like navigating in the dark.
Families deserve tools that make school information easy to find and understandable. That’s what Navigated AZ, in partnership with the National School Choice Awareness Foundation, set out to provide through a new online school search tool that organizes school data and makes it easy for parents to explore what’s available nearby. The tool is free at NavigatedAZ.org/school-finder-tool.
For years, Arizona has prided itself on offering a wide variety of educational choices — traditional public schools, public charters, private options, microschools, online academies and more.
In theory, this abundance empowers families. But in practice, I’ve seen two scenarios: families either aren’t aware of all the options available or are overwhelmed by them. A recent study by EdChoice found that only about 50% of parents were aware that they lived in an open enrollment state. The same figure applies to awareness of education savings accounts.
We’re working to close that information gap with a simple, accessible and transparent online platform that allows families to search for schools near them, compare options and make informed decisions.
And this matters — deeply. Because school choice without information isn’t really a choice. It’s a guessing game. Low-income families, in particular, are often left behind the loop when information is scattered or difficult to access.
Not every parent has the time to visit five campuses and schedule counselor calls. An online tool like this levels the playing field for the people who know children best: their parents.
This effort is not just about ease of use; it’s about equity, transparency and trust. Every Arizona parent, regardless of ZIP code, should be able to discover schools that align with their values and aspirations. When families have access to clear information, everyone benefits; students find schools that fit them better, engagement increases and communities grow stronger.
In a state that has embraced educational freedom, it’s time we embrace educational clarity, too. NavigatED AZ’s school search tool doesn’t replace parent engagement, it enhances it. It doesn’t make the decision, it empowers it. For thousands of Arizona families, that could make all the difference.
