Arizona, other states sue Trump administration over $6.8B in held education funds

Arizona and 22 other states are suing the Trump administration over $6.8 billion nationwide in education funding being withheld from distribution.

Arizona has more than $132 million in the amount being held by the U.S. Department of Education a few weeks before school starts in the state. The funding impacts various programs from migrant education to professional development to before- and after-school programs.

“By freezing $132 million in funds owed to Arizona’s students, President Trump and his administration are increasing costs for Arizona’s schools, cities, and families,” said Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. “It’s unlawful for President Trump to hold up this education funding and wreak havoc on Arizona’s students and families — and it’s having an immediate and devastating impact.”

In the lawsuit, the states are arguing the withholding of money viotes federal law, the Antideficiency Act and the Impoundment Control Act.

Normally, the funds would have begun to be distributed on July 1. Local officials say not having those funds puts various programs in jeopardy.
