Arizona officials mum on voting bills’ impact

Controversial bills, like Georgia’s, could have impact on large events

Controversial voting bills were enough for the state of Georgia to lose the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and Arizona has both a large sporting event and its own election-related legislative bills coming up.

Glendale is poised to host the 2023 Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in what is scheduled to be the West Valley city’s third Super Bowl since 2008. But as state legislatures across the country, including Arizona, consider voting bills similar to the one Georgia passed this spring, the impact of potential laws on future events remains unclear.

Georgia became one of the first states to pass laws tightening up voting regulations after the 2020 election. While Republicans in that state defended the move as a way to ensure transparency and fairness in future elections, Democrats have cried foul and viewed the changes as a way to disenfranchise voters, particularly minorities.
