Arizona officials, GOP wrangle in court over 405 overseas voters

PHOENIX - State election officials are trying to block an effort by Republicans to cancel the registration of several hundred adult children of U.S. citizens - predominantly Democrats - who live overseas.

In legal briefs filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, Assistant Attorney General Karen Hartman-Tellez acknowledges that the voters in question never have lived in Arizona. Instead, they were born elsewhere and living overseas but are U.S. citizens because of their parents.

Under the terms of a 2005 state law, these people have been allowed to vote absentee, just the same as their parents who at one time lived in Arizona and have kept their state registration.
