Arizona Medicaid agency seeks input on work requirements

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System is seeking public input on a plan that would require work reporting as a condition of coverage for Medicaid.

The AHCCCS Works program requires participants ages 19 to 55 to have at least 20 hours of work per week to remain eligible. It is based on a 2015 law passed by the Legislature, and AHCCCS is required submit the proposal for the program to require the work requirements to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by March 30 of each year.

Public forums will be held 1-3 p.m. Feb. 27 virtually; 1-3 p.m. March 4 as a hybrid meeting at the ADOT Training Facility, 1130 N. 22nd Ave., Phoenix.; and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. March 13 virtually. Each forum requires registration. For information on registering and on joining, click here.

The program initially was submitted in December 2017 and approved in January 2019. Implementation was held because of pending litigation against similar programs and then was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before CMS eventually rescinded the approval in 2021.
