Arizona gas prices fall, but still above national averages

Arizona gas prices are declining, but are still well above the national average that fell below $3 a gallon this week for the first time in four years.

National prices this week hit $2.99 a gallon while Arizona overall dropped five cents to $3.27 per gallon, according to AAA. While local drivers saw a decline at the pump this year, the price around the state is still nine cents higher than this time last year.

Oil prices have hovered around $60 a barrel, which has added to prices falling, AAA officials said.

“Sluggish gas demand and cheaper-to-produce winter blend gasoline are also contributing to the drop at the pump,” said Julian Paredes, spokesperson, AAA Mountain West Group, in a press release. “Gas prices typically hit their cheapest point of the year during winter, which is still a few weeks away.”

Arizona remains among the top 10 most expensive markets for gas, coming in seventh behind Alaska and in front of Washington, D.C. California is the most expensive for gas at $4.51 a gallon, according to AAA.

The cheapest gas available in the U.S. is in Oklahoma, where prices average $2.40 a gallon, according to AAA.

Prices around the state vary, with cheaper gas to be found in Tucson and Yuma. In Phoenix, the average price is $3.40 per gallon, compared with $3.24 in Flagstaff, $3.16 in Yuma and $2.99 in Tucson.
