Arizona eviction crisis looms as COVID-19 pandemic surges

Dire predictions of a looming homelessness crisis seem to be coming to pass, as experts raise alarms about the toll of potential mass evictions — on renting families and everyone else.

High unemployment, stagnant income and skyrocketing rent prices have all combined to exacerbate the problem, creating something of a perfect storm, which coincides with a significant surge in the COVID-19 outbreak and expiration of local and federal eviction protections.

A study of the costs of evictions released in November by the National Low Income Housing Coalition and the University of Arizona James R. Rogers College of Law warns of the fallout, should leaders fail to act.
