Arizona Cardinals debut new alternative helmets

Team opts for black and red option

Posted

The Arizona Cardinals on Sunday debuted a new look for the team, and this year black is the new white when it comes to helmets.

The team rolled out the new helmets, using star players like J.J. Watt, Budda Baker and Kyler Murray in the unveiling of the black helmet with the tradition cardinal logo. The helmet has red metalic flakes in the paint.

"I see the red sparkles in there -- I think that's the best part of it," Pro Bowl safety Baker said when seeing the helmet for the first time, according to a report by Darrel Urban on the Cardinals' website. "It looks black but it has like a chrome-ish red look, those are going to look real clean. Play good, look good, feel good for sure."

The helmet is slated as part of the team's "color rush" uniform that all NFL teams use for specific games. This year, the Cardinals will don the black helmets three times:

Aug. 21 in a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens

Oct. 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles with the team's black jerseys.

Oct. 20 with the team's color rush uniforms.

"The look of this helmet is so incredibly sharp and something I know that both our players and fans will absolutely love," Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said on Cardinals.com. "We are excited to showcase them this season, especially on a national stage."

Prior to the addition, the Cardinals had used white helmets exclusively for 63 years. The team will be among 13 NFL clubs to use an alernative helmet for the upcoming season.
