Area residents speak against, for Mesa’s agreements between police, ICE

Mesa's police of working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to allow police to check immigration status for people arrested drew public comments during a recent meeting.

Three people spoke against or in favor of the city’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Section 287(g) lets U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorize local police and sheriff’s offices to carry out certain federal immigration enforcement duties through formal agreements with the federal government.
