APS seeks to extend Palo Verde’s operating licenses

Arizona Public Service Co. is seeking an extension of the licenses for Palo Verde Generating Station’s three nuclear reactors to beyond the 2040s.

The state’s largest utility stated in a release Monday that it notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on March 13 of its intent to seek a 20-year extension of the licenses of its three reactors. Currently, Palo Verde’s reactors are licensed through 2045 to 2047.

“Palo Verde Generating Station is essential to our customers, a strong contributor to Arizona’s economy and a cornerstone of our energy future,” said Ted Geisler, APS President and CEO, in a release.
