Apache Junction may contract with CoreCivic for jail services

Pinal County Detention Center costs to increase July 1

Heading to Florence for jail time from an Apache Junction City Court decision may soon mean being housed in a private facility instead of the Pinal County Detention Center.

The City Council on June 1 is to vote on a jail services contract with CoreCivic Inc. for the business to house misdemeanor-offense inmates in Florence at Central Arizona Florence Correctional Complex. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 300 E. Superstition Blvd.

If approved, the move would be part of a cooperative contract the city of Mesa has with CoreCivic, Apache Junction Police Department Chief Thomas E. Kelly said.
