The Surprise City Council heard an earful from angry residents and others who oppose an ICE detention center that is expected to open in the city this fall.
Dozens of anti-ICE protesters packed Council Chambers at City Hall on April 21 to tell the council it is not doing enough to push back against the Department of Homeland Security.
City Manager Andrea Davis, who conducts weekly talks with DHS officials, updated the council that the opening will not come until the fall because of funding issues as the department juggles its administration following last month’s leadership shakeup that saw Kristi Noem ousted as Secretary of Homeland Security.
