Another Mesa officer injured in weekend altercation with suspect

Incident follows Saturday fight at Dutch Bros Coffee

A Mesa police officer was injured Sunday in a confrontation with a man who refused to obey commands following a single-vehicle accident, authorities said.

The incident in the 900 block of South Horne occurred one day after three officers were injured in a fight with a man at a Dutch Bros Coffee in Mesa.

At about 11 a.m. Sunday, March 12, officers responded to the accident. A woman was driving the vehicle, and a man was at the passenger side where police said they saw him “manipulating items inside the passenger compartment.”

Police said when they told the man he was not free to leave he became confrontational. Other officers were called and while they were on the way a fight began, and an officer was injured, according to police.

The man was placed under arrest and searched.

Officers found a syringe with a liquid later confirmed to be heroin and a container with methamphetamines, police said. They were found in the pockets of the suspect’s shorts.

Leon Brisco, 30, has been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and possession of dangerous drugs/narcotics, police said.
