'Angels in America: Millennium Approaches' coming to Fountain Hills Theater

Posted

Fountain Hills Theater has announced the opening of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.”

“Angels in America Part One: Millenium Approaches” is a metaphorical and symbolic vision of America during the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell.

In Tony Kushner’s play, set in New York City, a gay man is abandoned by his lover when he contracts the AIDS virus, and a closeted Mormon lawyer’s marriage to his pill-popping wife stalls. Other characters include the infamous McCarthy-ite lawyer Roy Cohn, Ethel Rosenberg, a former drag queen who works as a nurse and an angel.

“Angels in America” is a drama that has earned awards for its portrayal of contemporary America, its mixture of brutal reality and miraculous fantasy, its tragedy and comedy, cruelties and compassions.

“Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches” was commissioned in 1990, workshopped in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper and given its official premiere in San Francisco by the Eureka Theatre Company in 1991. The play next appeared in London in 1992 at the Royal National Theatre. “Millennium Approaches” received its Broadway premiere the following season, opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre on May 4,1993 and directed by George C. Wolfe. The Broadway production ran for 367 performances.

Tony Kushner adapted the play into an HBO miniseries in 2003. “Millennium Approaches” was revived by the Signature Theatre Company in 2010. The play has also been produced by universities, high schools and regional theatres across the United States.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the play’s Broadway premiere.

It received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Awards for Best Play in 1993.

“Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” is directed by Chris R. Chavez and is presented through Special Arrangement with Concord Theatricals. It’s for mature audiences ages 18+, rated R for sexual situations, language and adult content.

“Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” will play March 3–19. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

All performances are at Fountain Hills Theater on its mainstage at 11445 N. Saguaro Blvd.
