Andrew P. Grachan, 100Sun City West resident Andrew P. Grachan died Oct. 12, 2007.Mr. Grachan was born Aug. 27, 1907, the third of 13 children of George and Magdeline Grachan. He happily celebrated his 100th birthday shortly before his death. He married Sonia Adamovich June 28, 1931, and they celebrated 72 years of marriage before she died in December 2003.He went to work in the steel mill in his hometown of Joliet, Ill., at a young age to help support his family. While working for the American Steel and Wire Co., which later became known as U.S. Steel Co., he was active in the Wireco Federal Credit Union where he held many positions, including director and president. He was also active in the CIO union and traveled extensively, participating in leadership training programs and many conventions. As chairman of the Joliet Will County Community Chest program, he appeared on local radio programs to gather support for the Community Chest Drive.After spending most of his life working, volunteering and leading many committees and programs, Mr. Grachan retired at 62. He and Sonia retired to Sun City in 1969.He enjoyed gardening, fishing and golf. He got his first hole-in-one when he was 81 and his second at 90 while playing in the Octogenarian Tournament at Desert Trails in Sun City West. He was also an active at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Sun City and ushered there for many years.For the past year, Mr. Gachan had been enjoying life as a resident of Alterra Clare Bridge in Sun City West.He is survived by two daughter, Marcy (late husband, Jim) Loeffler of Sun City West and Gale (Jerry) Lavely of Sun City; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
