The city of Apache Junction has had 18 claims or out-of-court settlements during the past two years, with four of them open and involving police actions, according to a review of records.
The majority show no expenses paid by the city’s insurance pool to handle or settle claims. Those with net incurred costs included $7,781 in 2018 to a claimant who alleged a vehicle was unlawfully towed. Those with a gross loss paid included $14,659.64 in 2020 when a public works department loader backed into a vehicle.
Of the four open claims, two are for Anthony Hopkins, who is alleging assault and battery from a March 30, 2019, incident. One covered under errors and omissions liability has had $164,595 in expenses paid by the city’s insurance pool to handle the claim, such as attorney fees; and a claim under premises operations liability has had no funds expended, according to the records.
