American Legion Post 94 gives back to Sun City West

Twice a year, American Legion Post 94 holds a pancake breakfast that is supported by the community. This past November, a record number of 675 breakfasts were served by the more than 40 Legion volunteers. These breakfast events are the primary fundraising functions for the post. Proceeds, which included several local sponsor donations, are given to the various nonprofit organizations supported by the American Legion. Post 94 thanks the many residents and local sponsors who supported this past November’s breakfast.

At the group’s Jan. 5 membership meeting, in addition to the presentation of the three checks, members heard interesting and emotionally-charged presentation from guest speaker Lauren Erickson, a Blue Star Mothers of America member.

Erickson began her story by telling how her high school daughter decided to apply to the Military Academy at West Point. Then, after days of lively family discussion, she went on to apply to all three military academies and was eventually accepted at all three. Her daughter is now an Army captain serving in Europe. The highlights of her story included how she became a Blue Star Mom, meeting many other actively engaged Blue Star Moms over the years. While the Blue Star organization is a support group for military mothers, they are most active and engaged in providing services to both active duty military personnel (especially their daughters and sons) and even veterans and their families. Blue Star Moms is a national organization that has local chapters all across the county. As written in their mission statement: “Our organization focuses on our mission every single day and will never, ever, forsake our troops, our veterans or the families of our Fallen Heroes.”
