Longtime American Legion post seeks solution to East Valley town's downtown plans

American Legion Post 39 leaders say they want to find a way to remain in Gilbert’s Heritage District even as town infrastructure plans could reshape the area around their longtime home.

Post Cmdr. Frank Banaszewski and other leaders said they have been meeting with town officials about the Ash Street Realignment Project, which is still in its early design phase but could remove much of the post’s nearby parking and complicate access for members, many of them older veterans.

“The big thing with this project is one, it's going to be so close to the building where the road's going to be,” Banaszewski said. “And that's one issue. Two is they're going to wipe out the parking for us.”
