Alyce Tyler Tinthoff, 95Alyce Tyler Tinthoff, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died peacefully May 18, in Scottsdale, after suffering a stroke. She was 95. The oldest of seven children, Ms. Tinthoff was born in West Branch, Iowa in 1912. She met Fred Tinthoff in Chicago in the early 1930s, where she worked as a legal secretary and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. They married in 1937. During WWII, they lived at the Naval Air Base in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Postwar years were spent in central Illinois, in Washington and then in Eureka. She and Fred loved to dance, play bridge, and entertain. Ms. Tinthoff was active in Girl Scouts, Mother's Club, PTA, bridge clubs, garden clubs and art. In 1963 they moved to Rossmoor, Calif., where she immersed herself in art and studied extensively with many well-known California artists. An entrepreneur at heart, she sold paintings at art fairs and taught painting for the adult recreation classes at Long Beach State.After Fred's death in 1979, she moved to Sun City West and traveled, visiting China twice, spending time on the coast of Spain and returning to Europe and Japan. She and her special friend, Chuck Holstrom, spent many happy summers in his home on Georgetown Lake in Montana. In 2004, she moved to Westminster Village in Scottsdale, where she made many new friendships and enjoyed being closer to family and great grandchildren.Ms. Tinthoff was known for an outgoing personality and love of conversation. She was blessed with a long and productive life, and we, her family, will always remember her with love.Ms. Tinthoff is survived by her three daughters, Trish Mayberry (Bill) of Paradise Valley, AZ, Linda Landau (Jim) of Orinda, Calif. and Terry Jones (Irving) of London, England; five grandchildren, Michael Mayberry, Karrin Taylor, James, Elizabeth and Alex Landau; and two great grandchildren, Bennett and Kate Taylor. She is also survived by her sister, Winifred Joost, and brother, Richard Tyler, and longtime family friend, Tatsuo Okada.A memorial service to honor Ms. Tinthoff's life will be held 2 p.m., Friday, June 8, in the Crossroads room at Westminster Village, 12000 N. 90th St., Scottsdale.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Weyrich Health Center, Att.
