Allen “Owl” Harold Ferguson I, a celebrated Arizona muralist, devoted man of God, and proud Veteran, passed away on November 10, 2025. He as 89.
He was born on November 1, 1936, in Bedford, Pennsylvania to William Brown Ferguson and Evelyn Mae Cessna.
Allen served his country honorably in the U.S. Army, a member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division. Following his military service, he pursued his calling in ministry, attending Northeast Bible Institute and serving in many capacities within his church, including time spent as a Pastor in Saint Thomas, PA, and writing various Christian publications like Youth Alive in Springfield, MO.
In 1975, Allen moved his family to Phoenix, Arizona, carrying his enduring love for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was in Arizona his artistic career flourished. Known professionally and affectionately as “Owl”, he became well known in the ‘80’s for his vibrant and large scale murals. His quiet and reserved nature contrasted beautifully with the massive scale of his work, which brought color and life to the Arizona landscape.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Vera (McKinney) Ferguson, who passed away five years ago. He is survived by his children from his previous marriage to Patricia Oswandel Ferguson: Joni, Jill, Janice, Allen Harold II, Andrew, Peter, Eric, and Jesse, as well as three stepchildren: Ken McKinney, Kendra Adams and Landra Mathis. Allen was a grandfather and great grandfather to many.
Allen “Owl” Harold Ferguson I leaves behind a legacy defined by his military service, artistic passion, deep faith, and expansive family. While the loss of his physical presence is profound, his spirit endures in the vivid art that has decorated the city and in the many hearts he touched.
A Celebration of Life Service will held at Crossroads Baptist Church in Apache Junction, AZ, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., with light refreshments following the service.
