AJUSD drops face-mask requirements in split vote

Now optional for students, staff members, Governing Board decides

A face-mask policy put in place to stem the spread of COVID-19 has been lifted, making wearing of the items optional for students and employees, the Apache Junction Unified School District’s Governing Board decided Monday.

The change passed in a 3-2 vote at a May 3 special meeting, with board members Bobby Bauders and Chelsea Connolly dissenting.

The new policy went into effect May 4. The last day of K-12 instruction is May 20 and the last day for teachers is May 21, according to the district’s 2020-21 academic calendar.
