Home safety assessments in Sun City West

In early 2020, the Arizona Fire & Medical Authority in Sun City West trained some Fire Corps volunteers to be able to spot home hazards and make recommendations to homeowners.
The COVID pandemic put an abrupt halt to that promising program, but Arizona Fire & Medical officials, decided with fully motivated Fire Corps members, to resume providing this service to Sun City West residents.
These Fire Corps members will visit homes and conduct a safety walk through and make recommendations based on findings.
Some of the items they will check are smoke detectors, including placement and function. If the home has fire extinguishers, volunteers will check for adequate charge, proper use and correct placement.
These trained members will check around heating and cooking appliances for safe best practices. Are circuit breakers and GFCI outlets clearly identified? Does the hot water heater and furnace have a 3-foot clearance from clutter or flammable material?
These volunteers will check the home for potential hazards as well as tripping hazards.
Volunteers will not recommend any safety products, but simply offer an assessment of home safety and the steps to make it safer.
