The U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services program recently issued a report on active shooter preparedness.
After more than 30 years privately representing law enforcement clients, it’s my opinion that school districts, teachers and unions, gangs, drug dealers and parents got us into this mess. For years, I watched local police try to work with schools and get little cooperation.
1. Going back 30-plus years, local police tried to participate in school driver education programs. Most youth have their first contact with police when they get behind the wheel of a car. Teachers’ unions and school administrators fought it.
2. Drug Abuse Resistance Education — DARE. School unions, parents, gangs and school administrators fought independent police involvement with school children. They fought to stop children from talking to and trusting our police.
3. Police school security. No school in America wanted our experts in security and protecting the public on duty in our schools every day. Local police gave up trying to design and implement school security systems. Arizona is one of the worst authorizing schools to employ their own security guards. Worthless people in a fight. No one wants the police working directly with our children on a daily basis.
