Personal safety is on the minds of Sun City West residents and according to a state expert, education and awareness are important.
Lieutenant Kenneth W. Silvia, Maricopa County Attorney’s Office bureau chief, said understanding statistics and that there is no official definition for mass shootings is where people need to start. He said the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security and the Arizona Department of Public Safety all have different definitions of what constitutes a mass shootings. Statistics can be all over the place when reading about mass shootings, Silvia added.
“It is important to look at who is providing statistics and what the personal motivation would be,” he said.
