A wet winter, blooming spring can spell troublesome mosquito season

Mosquitoes bring threat of West Nile Virus to Valley

As summer approaches, pest and health care officials alike are urging people to protect themselves against mosquitoes.

Aside from their itchy bites that are a general annoyance, Arizona mosquitoes can carry the deadly West Nile Virus. Although some people who contract the virus will be asymptomatic, and others may only produce a fever, a portion of those infected will die from the disease. There is no cure.

“Each day I would feel a little bit worse, and then I ran a fever of 103.8. All of my joints hurt, the pain just continued to get worse and worse; I ended up in urgent care, they thought I had bursitis. Then I ended up in the ER,” said Carolyn Beguin, who contracted West Nile Virus Sept. 1, 2021. “I had dizziness, I had blurred vision. Gosh, it was so over-whelming. My head hurt so bad; I couldn’t move my right arm without excessive pain.”
