Federal, Arizona legal fights show pitched battle regarding transgender, nonbinary people

Despite changes in attitudes becoming more open and understanding of different gender identities, challenges persist with federal and local legislators pushing actions that could negatively impact transgender individuals.

According to the Trans Legislation Tracker, in 2024 there were 672 anti-trans bills were introduced across 43 states, and during election season transgender identities were used as divisive talking points in political speeches and advertisements.

In Arizona, bills like Sen. John Kavanagh’s Senate Bill 1002 and Senate Bill 1003 have become focal points of the state’s anti-transgender legislative efforts.
