A miscommunication over a planned lockdown drill on Friday at one Queen Creek school campus unintentionally triggered drills throughout the district while the real thing was happening at Queen Creek High School.
A school in the Queen Creek Unified School District had scheduled a lockdown drill but the notification for the planned exercise “was unintentionally shared with all QCUSD sites,” according to a statement from the district.
“Because schools were not yet aware that the alert was connected to the scheduled drill, they followed standard procedures and initiated a lockdown as a precaution,” the statement continued.

The error was quickly corrected, and kids went back to class. But amid the confusion, the Queen Creek Police Department reported that at about 9:20 a.m. it received a 911 call “from a student” at QCHS who “reported hearing gunshots on campus.”
QCHS was placed under a real lockdown while QCPD began checking the campus, going room-by-room. No threats were found, and the lockdown has since been lifted.
“QCPD has cleared the campus. There are no reported injuries and no known threat or danger to the school or community,” according to a QCPD statement. “Officers continue to investigate, but at this point, there is no credible information indicating any shots were fired or that there was any active threat.”
QCUSD confirmed that the 911 call came from Queen Creek High.
“Our students and staff responded with calm, confidence and professionalism — demonstrating their strong understanding of and commitment to our safety procedures,” the district stated.
