5-vehicle collision on Interstate 10 leads to man's death
Posted
A 54-year-old man died Tuesday night after a five-vehicle collision closed a stretch of Interstate 10, according to a Arizona DPS spokesman.
The collision occurred at about 5:55 p.m. Nov. 28 on eastbound I-10 near 107th Avenue.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a 2005 Toyota pickup truck rear-ended a 2014 Mazda hatchback vehicle.
Trooper Kameron Lee said the driver of the Mazda, identified as 54-year-old Robert Bathel, was declared dead at the scene. Officials believe he was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the Toyota received minor injuries and was not transported.
Mr. Lee said there were no passengers in either of those vehicles.
Mr. Lee said no information was available on the occupants of the other three vehicles involved.
However, he said no one was transported as a result of any injuries.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said eastbound I-10 was closed at 107th Avenue, with long delays backing up traffic before Dysart Road. The section of the freeway reopened at about 10:20 p.m.
