5-story apartments approved in historic Phoenix district

A Phoenix historic preservation officer last week allowed an exception for a five-story apartment building to be built on the edge of a small historic district north of downtown.

The approval from Historic Preservation Officer Nick Viola came with a stipulation that the apartment building expand its rooftop patio on the fifth floor to push the building face on that floor farther from the street, making the building look less looming to passersby.

The 0.4-acre property at the northwest corner of Fifth and Willetta streets, just north of Interstate 10, currently holds two boarded up residential buildings — one that is two-stories and that is a single story. The property is on the edge of the small East Evergreen Historic District. The project is called The Manolin.
