Four Surprise Police officers and one other person are recovering from smoke inhalation from a fire Monday, Dec. 13 at the Village at West Point apartments on West Point Parkway.

Surprise Police are still investigating the fire, which affected several units at the complex near Litchfield and Bell roads.

“Upon our arrival, the fire was smoldering,” Surprise Fire-Medical Spokeswoman Julie Moore said. “Crews quickly extinguished the fire and rescued a patient suffering from smoke inhalation.”

That resident was rescued through a window and hospitalized at a trauma center.

The four police officers suffered smoke inhalation and were also hospitalized but are expected to be recover, said police spokesman Tommy Hale.

No firefighters were injured in the incident, Moore said.

At least eight residents were displaced, according to media reports.
