Mesa police officers were involved in a shooting that left 35-year-old Brandon Franklin Kizer deceased. No officers were injured during the incident, which will now be investigated by Gilbert Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
At approximately 6:20 p.m. Aug. 7, Mesa police officers responded to 150 S. Roosevelt Road for reports of a stabbing. The caller reported a man was outside of an apartment stabbing himself. An additional caller from another apartment reported the man’s mother had been stabbed and that an additional family member was still inside the residence where the man was located, police said.
When Mesa officers arrived, they located the man outside of the apartment holding a large knife to his chest. Officers gave the man commands to drop the knife, but he refused. Additional officers responded and located the man’s mother in a nearby apartment.
It was unknown at that time if the second family member inside the apartment was injured as the man moved toward the front door. Officers deployed pepper ball and less-lethal bean bag rounds at the man, but they were ineffective. This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred, police said.
Four officers were involved in the incident, and no officers sustained injuries.
Kizer was pronounced deceased on-scene at 7:13 p.m. by the Tempe Fire Department. Kizer’s mother was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no additional injuries reported.
This will be an East Valley Critical Incident Response Team investigation with the Gilbert Police Department as the primary investigating agency. The incident is under investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
The Mesa Police Department report number for the initial call of domestic violence/aggravated assault is 2024-167290. Gilbert Police Department’s report number for the officer-involved shooting is 24-114113.
