$3.7M Delaware Drive project includes storm drain in Apache Junction

An open storm water channel will be placed underground at Delaware Drive, 16th Avenue to Broadway Avenue, as part of a $3.7 million roadway project.

The city of Apache Junction monies and federal funding will be used for the design and construction, with work anticipated to begin in 2024. That work includes bicycle lanes, sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, curb and gutter, a center shared turn lane, street lights and a storm drain.

“This is the only section that is two lanes of road and ... on the west side of the street there is a big, big drainage channel. I’ve seen — when we’ve done the roadway construction of this project — we actually had an incident of the roller falling in the channel. And I’m sure there are other incidents as well too. So this is a safety concern,” Project Engineer Raquel Schatz told the City Council May 18.
