$305K grant received for Apache Junction library’s Fun Van

The Apache Junction Public Library has been awarded a $305,000 grant from Arizona’s early childhood agency, First Things First, for the longstanding Fun Van program.

The grant will enable the library to continue and expand its mobile parenting education classes through the Fun Van, which is now entering its 13th year of operation.

“We are so proud of this continuing support to help reach the underserved population of our community,” Apache Junction Library Director Pam Harrison said in a release. “Research has consistently highlighted the critical role of the first five years of a child’s life in brain development, early literacy, and language acquisition.

“During this period, caregivers often find themselves in need of guidance on how to become their child’s first and best teacher, ensuring their future school readiness and overall success,” Harrison said.

Recognizing this need, the Fun Van program, with the support of First Things First, acts as a bridge to empower parents and caregivers with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate these formative years effectively.

The Fun Van program, designed and facilitated by the library, 1177 N. Idaho Road, offers comprehensive classes that cater to both parents and young children.

“By providing a holistic approach to early childhood education, Fun Van ensures that parents are engaged in teacher-led discussions where they can acquire valuable insights, strategies and resources to support their child’s development. Simultaneously, children are immersed in an enriching environment where they can enjoy interactive storytelling, developmentally appropriate activities, access to free books, and positive social-emotional experiences that foster their growth and learning,” the release states.

Parents and caregivers of children up to age 5 are invited to register for these transformative and free 90-minute classes, which occur in eight-week cycles. The classes are offered at various locations across Pinal County to maximize accessibility and reach as many families as possible. To secure a spot for your child, go to ajpl.org/funvan.
