Proposition 202 monies

$300K in tribal gaming compact funds to go to Mesa museum

Additional $235K to go to 6 area nonprofits

More than half of $535,000 received by the city in Proposition 202 funds from the Gila River Indian Community will go to a new Sonoran desert’s first peoples exhibit at the Arizona Museum of Natural History in Mesa.

The Mesa City Council on Aug. 29 voted to accept the funds from the Gila River Indian Community and administer them as pass-through grants to designated awardees.

Proposition 202, passed with the 2002 gaming compact in Arizona, directs participating tribal governments to share 12% of their gaming revenues with surrounding local governments. Nonprofit organizations are eligible to compete with a local government agreeing to serve as a pass-through agent.
