A woman died Monday morning after she was hit by three vehicles as she was walking eastbound on Interstate 10 within the Broadway Curve construction zone, authorities said.

The woman, who was not a construction worker and may have been impaired, was hit about 6:15 a.m. Dec. 11 and died at the scene, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Of the three vehicles involved, two drivers stayed at the scene, one fled on foot, officials said.

Three lanes of the freeway were closed for hours following the collision, and rush-hour traffic was backed up for several miles, officials said.

Interstate 10 lanes reopened late Monday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
