Cell towers designed as faux palm trees are to be placed at three parks as part of a larger project for the city of Mesa to provide public-accessible internet for students in underserved communities.
As the towers are to exceed the maximum height allowed, special use permits are big sought before the Mesa Board of Adjustment. The board meets for a work session at 4:30 p.m. and a meeting at 5 p.m. May 3 in the council chambers, 57 E. First St.
The wireless communication facilities are to provide Wi-Fi coverage to help address the digital divide and make sure more Mesa school students have internet access. The applicant and owner is the city of Mesa, Staff Planner Chloe Durfee Daniel said in a written staff report.
