It was a long and winding road for Surprise residents and political leaders trying to put together a true youth community center in the city’s Original Town Site — so long that they picked up a couple more generations before reaching their destination.
During its April 5 meeting, the Surprise City Council unanimously approved an $18 million intergovernmental agreement with Maricopa County to use American Rescue Plan Act money to establish a regional, multigenerational community resource center. The county Board of Supervisors approved its end of the agreement April 6.
This agreement provides the bulk of the funding for the estimated $26.4 million, 38,000-square-foot community center at 15660 N. Hollyhock St. The center is designed to be one large building replacing three smaller, stalwart OTS facilities and enhancing the ability to serve nearby residents.
