211-year-old barn is now casita in Paradise Valley home

Owner describes it as ‘authentic, organic, unique’

A barn over 200 years old stands in the backyard of Laura Paquelet-Carpinelli’s home in Paradise Valley.

The mortise and tenon barn circa 1812 was transformed into a casita or guest house soon after Paquelet-Carpinelli and her husband, Rick Carpinelli, moved from Ohio to Paradise Valley. It was originally built to house English soldiers as part of Fort Henry on the St. Lawrence River in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. All the hand-hewn beams in the casita are original to the barn.

The builder, Joshua Booth, served as a sergeant in the Revolutionary War and became a prosperous landowner and miller, as well as a Justice of the Peace and member of the first Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, according to Paquelet-Carpinelli.
