2 Arizona women-owned businesses blaze own trails of success through innovation, perseverance and passion

Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is more than a marker in Phoenix

Nov. 19 marks Women’s Entrepreneurship Day and two Phoenix-area businesses run by women have found hope despite the fear of suffering financial impacts of COVID-19.

Before the pandemic hit, the market for businesses owned and operated by women were seeing great increases in success within the state. For the first time since 2007, women-owned businesses in Arizona increased by 32.1% compared to a 1.7% growth rate among all businesses.

For the family-run Music Maker Workshops in Ahwatukee, sisters Shelley Yakubow and Kim Steedman jumped right into action when businesses began closing and schools started to shut down. The pair quickly modified their one-on-one music lessons for their students into an accessible virtual platform.
