When Proposition 207 was passed by Arizona voters in November 2020, the state became one of 18 that legalized the sale of recreational marijuana. Now, a year into practice, community colleges are beginning to see the benefit.
About $196 million in cannabis taxes has been gathered since dispensaries across Arizona began selling marijuana to non-medical users on Jan. 22, 2021. The Maricopa County Community College District, the largest system in the state, is expected to receive about $17.1 million from the first year of sales and the 16% excise tax laid out in the proposition.
According to Prop. 207, 33% is to be split among community college districts, 31.4% will go to municipal police and fire districts, 25.4% is earmarked for the Highway User Fund to make roads safer, 10% will go to the Justice Reinvestment Fund to expunge marijuana criminal charges, and 0.2% goes to the attorney general.
