18-year-old killed in multi-vehicle crash in Avondale

An 18-year-old was identified after a collision in Avondale.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Alika Preston Lyau-Goodwin, 18, was pronounced dead at the hospital Wednesday.

Around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, three vehicles were stopped in the far-right eastbound lane on Buckeye Road, just east of Dysart Road. MCSO said one of the vehicles was disabled and the other two vehicles had stopped to help and were attempting to hook a tow line to tow the vehicle.

At that time Marianna Villalobos Lopez, 23, was driving eastbound in a red 2013 Dodge Charger when she collided with the vehicles, causing a four-car pileup.

MCSO deputies learned two individuals, Alika Lyau-Goowin and Josiah Gerona, both 18, were underneath the vehicle securing tow straps to the broken-down vehicle when the collision occurred.

Ms. Lopez was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Mr. Lyau-Goowin was transported in critical condition where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Gerona was in critical condition but later upgraded to stable. The other four people at the scene suffered only minor injuries and were not transported.

MCSO said impairment does not appear to be a factor in the collision, but speeding is likely.

No charges or citations have been submitted as of Thursday afternoon.

Facebook profiles for Alika Lyau-Goodwin and Josiah Gerona show they are from Hawaii but currently live in Avondale, attending Universal Technical Institute in Avondale.

Editor's Note: Corrects article to reflect Lopez is a female.
