The Apache Junction Police Department is seeking grants totaling $140,499 for DUI Task Force overtime pay, speed-enforcement equipment and a scanner to improve accident investigations at serious and fatal vehicle collisions.
The city council on March 15 voted unanimously in a consent agenda with other items to approve authorizing the submission of three applications for grants through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
“Each year the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety offers a grant program which allocates federal funds to finance state and local government highway safety projects intended to supplement, not be a substitute for, ongoing state or local program expenditures,” AJPD Chief Michael Pooley said in a memo to the council. “Projects should be designed to eliminate a deficiency in an applicant agency’s program or to expand an existing program.”
