The Apache Junction City Council on Monday is to discuss a request by the police department to purchase a motorized retractable shooting range cover from Covershots Mobile Canopies International.

The council meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 for a work session in the city council chambers, 300 E. Superstition Blvd.

The request is for a total amount not to exceed $139,079.05, which includes a 10% contingency amount. The procurement will be funded through the capital improvement projects funding approved this fiscal year.

“Our police officers use the outdoor shooting range throughout the entire year, to include the summer and winter months. The structure is designed to provide officers with shade and protection from the elements any time of the year,” AJPD Assistant Chief Johnny John said in a memo to the council.

“This structure will span 104 feet in length and is motorized giving the ability to adapt to necessary training requirements. The canopy will also come with built-in lighting, fans, overhead, rear and side shading all retractable providing protection from the sun and heat of the summer,” he said.
