Queen Creek teen competed in Junior Olympics

Posted

A Queen Creek teen finished strong at the 2026 USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics championships over the summer.

Nathan Starr, 17, a senior at ASU Prep Polytechnic, finished 11th in the 1,500-meter race at the event in Norwalk, California, with a time of 4 minutes and 12 seconds.

“My racing journey started in eighth grade after a friend said I should join the cross-country team for ASU Prep, and I decided to give running a try,” Starr stated in a press release.

At ASU Prep, Starr met the coach who helped ignite a passion for the sport. Since then, he has dedicated himself to training, recovery and nutrition, and always looking for ways to improve.

“Running has taught me that progress doesn't happen overnight, it comes from showing up every day and trusting the work you put in,” he stated in the release, adding that knowing he can always get faster and stronger is what motivates him to strive higher.

As an ASU Prep Polytechnic STEM High School student, Starr is able to take advantage of Family Choice Day on Fridays, which gives him the flexibility to work from home and spend extra time running or weightlifting, as well as taking ASU classes and exploring his future college major.

Nathan is now looking ahead to graduation and hopes to run at the collegiate level.
