Queen Creek son Dr. Alexander Matheson has called the eastern Maricopa County residential enclave home long before the rural town was transformed into the bustling community it is today.
But all along, Dr. Matheson knew it was just a matter of time before Queen Creek became the local economic driver it is today.
“Since he was born and raised in Queen Creek, I’ve heard him say he ‘believed in Queen Creek before Queen Creek believed in itself,’” said Queen Creek resident Emily Johnston.
“He is the owner of Matheson Dentistry where his most commonly shared idea is that the team’s first and most important job is to truly care for the patient. Dr. Matheson is the kind of man that does the right thing even when no one is looking. He treats his patients with the same care he would his mom or dad. On many occasions, he has visited a patient who recently lost a loved one.”
The Queen Creek Independent is pleased to announce Dr. Matheson as the May 2021 Hometown Hero bestowed in the Healthcare category. Dr. Matheson was nominated for this award as a surprise by the long-time employee and dental hygienist, Emily Johnston.
Mrs. Johnston explains Dr. Matheson’s efforts span much wider than his burgeoning dentistry business.
“He’s done volunteer work for both the family resource and compassion centers here in Queen Creek,” she pointed out. “He volunteers for the youth group at his church leading the young men, which he has done diligently for eight years. Right now, he spends his Saturdays training a group of these young men to hike the Grand Canyon from ‘Rim to Rim.’”
Beyond providing mentorship to local youngsters, Dr. Matheson gives his time to refugees here in Arizona at the Phoenix-based Arizona Healthcare Outreach.
Mrs. Johnston explains he dedicates time each month to travel to Phoenix to help those in dire need of dentistry work.
Dr. Matheson serves in a civil service capacity at the Queen Creek Planning and Zoning Commission, which is a seven-person advisory board to Queen Creek Town Council on certain zoning matters.
“From 2010 to present he has volunteered on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the town of Queen Creek,” Ms. Johnston said. “He has served in both capacities as commissioner and as chairman.”
Mrs. Johnston also shared his fun side, sharing he owns goats and chickens, is a devoted husband and father to seven children, and has a dream of creating a garage band where he would be on drums or guitar. She says,
“In fact, he has created an office band with associate dentist Dr. Shawn Monahan called ‘The Drill Bits,’” she said. “They can rock!”
The Queen Creek Independent, along with East Valley Institute of Technology, Sterling Services, and the Queen Creek Olive Mill salute Dr. Matheson as this month’s Queen Creek Hometown Heroes Awards recipient.
