Despite prices in the Valley dropping 7 cents a gallon this week to $4.62 a gallon, the price represents an 85 cent increase over last year’s $3.77 a gallon.

“Continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed crude oil prices in the $90 per barrel range,” said Aldo Vazquez, AAA Mountain West Group spokesperson. “After a record-setting August, this Labor Day weekend is on track to also set a record at the pump,

“The national average has never been above $4 per gallon on Labor Day,” Vazquez added.

The national average sits at $4.14 a gallon, which is up 6 cents a gallon. Last year at this time, the national average was at $3.20 a gallon. The current Labor Day record is $3.82, set on September 3, 2012.

In Arizona, prices remained flat at $4.53 a gallon. At this time a year ago, the price at the pump was $3.49 a gallon.

At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, crude oil rose 79 cents to settle at $91.01 a barrel. The Energy Information Administration reports that crude oil inventories decreased by 4.5 million barrels from the previous week. At 424.5 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are 1% above the five-year average for this time of year.

Gasoline demand decreased last week from 9.04 million barrels per day to 8.92 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 206.8 million barrels to 205.7 million. Gasoline production stayed the same as last week, averaging 9.8 million barrels per day.

Arizona remained the eighth moist expensive market in the nation, behind California ($5.78), Washington ($5.47), Hawaii ($5.41), Oregon ($4.98), Alaska ($4.96), Nevada ($4.91) and Idaho ($4.62).

According to gasbuddy.com, the Valley’s cheapest gas can be found in four locations across the Valley: the Costco at 101st Avenue and McDowell Road in Avondale, the Costco at Interstate 10 and Verrado Way in Buckeye, the Buc-ee’s at Interstate 10 and Bullard Avenue in Goodyear and the Sam’s Club at Interstate 10 and Dysart Road in Avondale. All four locations have gas at $3.75 a gallon.
