To allow candidates the right to respond to criticisms about their candidacy before Election Day, the last day Independent Newsmedia will publish new election-related letters in our weekly print editions is Oct. 21, and the last day they will publish online is Oct. 27. Candidates may submit a 150-word reply addressing criticisms only and should email them to AzOpinions@iniusa.org along with their name, address, contact number and the headline of the letter they’re addressing.

OPINION — I’ve been a Gilbert resident for 16 years, and I’ve watched our state government go from bad to really bad.

Our legislature has been controlled by Republicans for the whole time I’ve lived here, and what do we have to show for it? Our public schools are being decimated, our very high-quality election system is being denigrated and threatened, our water is disappearing and our climate is getting hotter every year.

It is time for a change in our state Legislature.

Let’s get some new voices, new ideas and new energy in there to push forward some positive changes instead of the constant infighting and gridlock.

Gilbert has the opportunity to elect Mary Rose to the state House of Representatives in District 14.

Mary is a tireless advocate for quality public schools, finding solutions to our water crisis and lowering the cost of living for everyday Arizonans.

I’m asking my fellow Gilbert citizens to think about our state and our community and ask yourselves: Have you been well served by the Legislature?

For years, our state legislators from Gilbert have been a revolving door of the exact same politicians, year after year. They all have the same agendas, the same tired ideas. How refreshing would it be to elect a candidate who cares deeply about the people she wants to serve, who would bring new ideas and true passion to the job?

I’m ready for a big change? Are you?
