A 47-year-old man died following a shootout Friday morning in the 5100 block of West Southern Avenue, Phoenix police said.
The shooting occurred about 6:30 a.m. April 5 near 51st and Southern avenues, and the man died after fleeing the scene and crashing a car into a home north of the shooting location, police said.
When officers arrived the shooting site, they found a man with a gunshot wound, and he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a release.
A short time later, police received a service call indicating a vehicle had hit a home near 51st and Sunland avenues. Inside the vehicle was James Baines II, 47, with at least one gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead.
Detectives said preliminary information suggests the men were involved in a shootout, and Baines fled the area before succumbing to his injuries.
The man in the shootout with Baines II provided police with a self-defense claim, and he was released from custody after being interviewed, the release stated.
The investigation remains active, and police said the case will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for a charging decision.
