Phoenix police detectives have booked a man on charges stemming from an investigation of a collision that left several people in the hospital and one dead.
Officers responded about 9:45 p.m. March 6 to the 51st Avenue overpass at Interstate 10 regarding a collision that resulted in injuries to four people in the vehicles.
The driver of one of the vehicles, 22-year-old Dre Lewis, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The driver of the other vehicle and the two passengers in his vehicle were also taken to a hospital.
One passenger, 38-year-old Debbie Alvarez, was pronounced dead at the hospital. A boy remains in the hospital receiving treatment, police stated in a release.
Detectives stated that preliminary information suggests the vehicle driven by Lewis was northbound on 51st Avenue and failed to stop for a red light, causing his vehicle to collide with the other vehicle, which was eastbound on the I-10 freeway access road. The child was ejected from his vehicle, police said.
Lewis was released from medical care and booked on several charges, including manslaughter and extreme DUI. Police said his blood alcohol content was above .20.
