Softball: Dramatic rally lifts O’Connor past Basha

O’Connor third baseman Jada Rubalcava tries to tag out Basha baserunner Sariah Chacon in a May 9 elimination game. Rubalcava had four hits — including both a solo home run and a run-scoring single in a dramatic seventh inning — as the Eagles mounted a late comeback and held on for a 16-14 win at Basha to stay alive in the 6A state tournament.

O’Connor pitcher Daisy Herrera wasn’t able to glove a throw on this play when Basha’s Addi Kimberlin scored. But Herrera, a junior, pitched well enough in 4 and 2/3 innings of relief to help the Eagles with the 6A elimination road game, 16-14, to stay alive in the state tournament.

CHANDLER — The O’Connor Eagles needed a big final inning May 9 to keep their softball season going.

As it turned out, the Eagles needed every bit of that big inning.

O’Connor only led in one inning — the seventh — of their come-from-behind, 16-14 win at Basha. And that was because the Eagles mounted a furious, nine-run rally in the top of the seventh, then endured a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to eliminate the host Bears and stay alive in the 6A tourney.
